Late Night Fire Damages Car Dealership in Washington

A fire charred and melted its way through an auto dealership and detail shop in Bremerton’s West Hills Monday night, summoning firefighters from throughout Kitsap County to contain the blaze.

At least 25 fire engines and ambulances arrived about 8:49 p.m. to fight the flames within the Haselwood Used Cars and West Hills Auto Plex Detail Center, located at 4949 Auto Center Boulevard, said Bremerton Fire Department Battalion Chief Dean Souza.

“The whole back half of the shop had smoke and fire billowing out,” Souza said.

No injuries were reported.

At least three cars were destroyed inside. Area residents heard the sounds of explosions; Souza said said a large roll-up door collapsed that made a lot of noise. He called the fire “stubborn” as the building is made of metal. The fire warped much of the back half of the building.

The Bremerton Fire Marshal is still investigating the cause.

Bremerton fire crews were joined by those of Central Kitsap Fire & Rescue, South Kitsap Fire & Rescue, Navy Region Northwest Fire and Poulsbo Fire Department in putting out the blaze. Efforts took until about 1:15 a.m. Tuesday morning, with more observations by firefighters planned for Tuesday.
